Drought resilience through wetlands

Wetland Revival has completed an important wetland restoration project on private land. The project was funded through the Australian Government’s Future Drought Fund program. Over the last 18 months, we have tested the impact of restoring 160ha of wetlands on the drought resilience of 12 farms in the Lower Loddon landscape.

We have now obtained further detailed scientific evidence of the benefits of wetlands to farmers and the broader community through:

  • Rehydration from restoring the natural hydrology,
  • Establishing threatened species habitat and bush fodder sources through revegetation,
  • Providing an opportunity to restore country by collaborating with Traditional Owners,
  • Improving soil carbon through rewetting and restoring plants, and
  • Creating attractive refuges that boost farmers emotional resilience.

We are deeply grateful to the farmers who went on this journey with us, and we’re glad we have been able to contribute to their environmentally sensitive farming operations. Thanks also to project partners Arthur Rylah Institute and Deakin University’s Blue Carbon Lab.
